Mr Barra's appointment came hours before news broke of that married Google co-founder was in an apparent relationship with the 26-year-old, who as a marketing manager for the company's much-vaunted computerised spectacles.

Amanda Rosenberg, marketing manager for Google Glass.

Tech blog AllThingsD reported that Mr Brin has separated from his wife Anne Wojcicki, also 40. She is the chief executive of a biotechnology firm in which Google invested millions of dollars. Her sister also works for the internet search company.

Mr Brin and Miss Rosenberg were pictured together at the New York Fashion Show earlier this year. There is no suggestion Miss Rosenberg, who could not be reached for comment, was involved with Mr Brin while he was still in a relationship with his wife, with whom he has two children.

Miss Rosenberg was named as Mr Brin's new partner by Valleywag, a Silicon Valley news blog.

She was previously linked romantically to Mr Barra.

Miss Rosenberg has worked closely with Mr Brin, who has a personal fortune of $22bn (£14 billion), on Glass.

She is believed to have attended the University of Leeds before joining Google in London in 2008 after graduating. She transferred to the firm's headquarters in San Francisco last year.

Miss Rosenberg is said to have got her Google Glass job after coming up with the voice command, "OK, Glass", to activate the device.

Writing on a friend's blog, she described being nervous about her move abroad after enjoying a "beautifully choreographed life in London for pretty much my entire life".

She joked about someone in her position trying to ensure her "new boss" would "like me immediately" and recommended meeting "office people outside the office" as a way to integrate with new colleagues.
