CDC tests prove St. Bernard Parish water supply contains the Brain eating amoeba - Pentagon Post

The death of a boy in Louisiana due to the brain eating amoeba has sent the health department officials into frenzy and a number of tests have been conducted in the water bodies in the city including swimming pools.

The St. Bernard Parish water supply was found to contain the Brain eating amoeba. The infection is believed to have been caused by low chlorine levels in the water. However the health officials have clarified that the water is safe to drink but cautioned the public to keep it away from the nose especially while bathing. The victim had played on the home side water slide.

The tests carried out on the Louisiana parish's water supply confirmed that the existence of the rare brain eating amoeba in the water and it has also been indicted in the death of the 4 year old boy last month.

According to the Department of health, tests conducted by the CDC have confirmed the fears that the St.Bernard Paris water is contaminated with Naegleria fowleri or the brain eating amoeba.

The Naegleria fowleri is often found in the warm and fresh waters in Southeastern United States. The causative pathogen enters the human body through the nose and travels to the brain where its starts affecting the brain tissues which become damaged and the patient usually die. Health officials have said that there is no danger in drinking the water or cooking with the contaminated water.

The infection is rapidly fatal and till date only one girl has survived the infection. The Girl was given an experimental cancer drug after her brain was cooled and artificial coma was induced.

After the report that the water of the St Bernard Parish water is contaminated with the Brain eating amoeba, authorities have started to flush the lines with chlorine and the process will continue for the coming days until the chlorine levels have reached the recommended levels.
