Lake Villa school raises money, breast cancer awareness with annual walk - Chicago Daily Herald

How many Palombi Middle School students does it take to create a giant human ribbon? Around 750.
Seventh and eighth grade students from the Lake Villa school participated in the third annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk Friday morning. Pink bracelets, T-shirts and necklaces were sold during the week, with proceeds benefiting cancer research. The school raised more than $900.

The walk is held in honor of a former teaching assistant Mary Jo Bailey, who died in 2010 from breast cancer.
Students gathered on the parking lot as dean of students Dan McCuistion said a few words. "We do this in celebration of those who have left us. We do this in celebrating those people who are fighting cancer. And we are celebrating all the work that's done by scientists and doctors and just little people like us that are raising money to help find an end to this."
McCuistion led the students in a moment of silence before heading out into a nearby neighborhood for the walk and the formation of the ribbon.
"Hopefully some day we will find a cure for all forms of cancer," he said.
