Molly Causing Havoc on Party Scene - WKRB News

This summer four deaths have taken place after people used Molly, a new drug that has been marketed often as MDMA's pure form. MDMA is the main chemical used in ecstasy.

Molly is increasing in popularity as entertainers such as Kanye West, Miley Cyrus and Madonna have spoken about it.

Molly is the drug's street name and is believed widely to be a pure powder form of MDMA, which is banned and ecstasy's main chemical.

Anna, a therapy student and artist along with her friends marked a birthday recently in New York with an all too familiar ritual: They increased the volume of their electronic music, danced all night long and celebrated with their special guest named Molly.

Molly is an illegal stimulant that is often sold in the form of a pill. It is now prominent in places where electronic music is heard. Anna, the therapist said she counsels people on being healthy and did not want to release her name.

Over the past five years, Molly has arrived in pop culture, thanks in part to references made to it by entertainers West, Cyrus and Madonna.

The dangers of the drug became more apparent following a number of overdoses including the four deaths. In the late 1980s and the early '90s ecstasy was in its heyday, but its popularity started to wane following many deaths a decade ago.

Because of that, Molly started to make a name in the scene. Over the past couple of years, drugs known by that name have started to flood the market said a spokesman for the Drug Enforcement Administration.

In certain states, an increase of 100-fold has been seen in the number of seizures, visits to the emergency rooms, overdoes and arrests, over the past three years.
